Prosecutor’s Office - The cause of death of Giorgi Shakarashvili is asphyxiation by drowning

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has named asphyxiation by drowning in water as the cause of death of 19-year-old Giorgi Shakarashvili. 

“Because of the high public interest, we want to inform the public about the death of G. Shakarashvili, the results of the medical examination conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to the examination, the cause of his death is asphyxia by drowning.

At the same time, G. Shakarashvili’s body suffered injuries before death to his forehead/head, both eyelids, upper and lower lip, right elbow joint, and right forearm, as well as abdomen, buttocks and both sides of the waist with the hard-blunt subject. These injuries show signs of mild damage to the body.

Based on the conclusion of the medical examination and the joint analysis of other evidence in the case, the General Prosecutor’s Office decided to clarify the qualification of the case on G. Shakarashvili’s death. In particular, a premeditated murder committed in aggravating circumstances added to the existing criminal case. The investigation launched under Article 109, Part 2, Subparagraph “e” of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is investigating the case.

Witness surveys and analysis of already obtained information are being conducted. Based on the obtained evidence, they will make a relevant legal decision, and G. Shakarashvili’s family and the public will be provided with detailed information from time to time”, - reads the statement of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.
