Georgian Dream will not support early termination of parliamentary mandates of 51 opposition MPs.

Accordingly, as it became known after the parliamentary majority session, the issue will not be passed during the voting and the matter of the parliamentary activities of the opposition will remain open.

“Based on the recommendation of the party’s political council, after a lengthy discussion, the parliamentary majority decided to abstain from terminating parliamentary seats for the 51 MPs nominated by the opposition. This pragmatic decision of the Georgian Dream was based on several main points: radical opposition is trying to carry out what we called the parliamentary sabotage, and which the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe described last Monday more harshly, as an attempt to undermine democracy.

However, Georgia has a constitution that has tools to go against anti-democracy procedures. Such a constitutional tool is the possibility of the Parliament to oppose the sabotage of the Parliament and not to terminate the parliamentary mandates of the deputies carrying out the sabotage. The Parliament of Georgia will activate this instrument guaranteed by the Constitution.

Today, 3 political parties are already represented in the Parliament. Consequently, any attempt by the radical opposition to undermine democracy is doomed to failure”, - explained Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of the ruling party.
