International media responds to the resignation of Giorgi Gakharia

International media is responding to the resignation of Giorgi Gakharia.

“Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia announced his resignation on Thursday, criticising a court decision to order the detention of an opposition leader which he said could lead to a “political escalation” in the country. A court granted a request to place Nika Melia, the chairman of the United National Movement party, into pretrial custody over charges of inciting mass violence at anti-government protests in 2019. Melia, 41, faces nine years in prison if convicted. The opposition says the move is politically-motivated and a witch hunt, something the ruling Georgian Dream party - of which Gakharia is a member - has denied”, - writes Euronews.

“Georgian Prime Minister announced his resignation on Thursday, a move that prompted celebration from the opposition and calls for early elections. Giorgi Gakharia, who had held the post since 2019, said he was stepping down because of a disagreement with his own team over the detention of Nika Melia, a prominent opposition politician, local media outlets reported”, - writes Usnews.
