An agreement between the Georgian Dream and the opposition failed. The meeting lasted several hours and ended without any concrete results.
“Today I made my second mediation mission in my capacity as President Michel’s personal envoy. Let me be clear, there is solution to present crisis, the solution that involves meaningful electoral and judicial reforms, the solution that involves sharing of responsibilities in parliament, to ensure common ownership and accountability for Georgia’s future, and a solution that puts an end to the protracted debates on key politicized judicial cases and early elections.
This is a solution that requires a political courage and responsibility. I proposed such solution to representatives of political parties and it will now be a public document. It"s the solution that puts the interest of the country first, above any other consideration. I’m sad to report that none of the political parties could agree to this solution in whole.
There was some agreement on the needs for electoral reforms and when it comes to reform of judiciary as well as power sharing in parliament. That is positive and should be something that one should continue to work on. In the end, Georgia’s western partners are not here to impose a solution on the parties. Those are not methods used by the EU. Our method is mediation and it is up to Georgia’s leaders to step up to challenge and find a compromise. I’ve said it before - compromise is a strength, it’s not a weakness. Fulfilling European aspirations requires compromise, especially by the party in power to bring the country out the crisis.
Indeed, with great ambitions, comes great responsibility. Sadly, I must note that there was not that willingness today around the table to reach such compromise. I will now report to President Michel on the developments of this week. It will be up to him to decide on next steps and timing of such steps”, - said Christian Danielsson.
