Former mayor of Poti sentenced to 8 years in prison

Former Mayor of Poti Irakli Kakulia was sentenced to 8 years in prison by the Zugdidi City Court.

Several people arrested together with Irakli Kakulia were sentenced to imprisonment, in particular, Zuri Kurua and Levan Chochia - to 7 years in prison, respectively, and Nikoloz Grigolia - to 2 years.

The case concerns the renovation of the coastline in Poti in 2015 and 2017 when Kakulia served as mayor, during which contractors embezzled about GEL 528,821, while the former official took a bribe of GEL 170,000 to “conceal the crime”, the Financial Ministry reported.

The lawyer of Irakli Kakulia plans to appeal the verdict in the Kutaisi Court of Appeal.

Former Poti Mayor and several other people were detained by the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance in November, 2019.
