The Parliament, during the first plenary sitting of the spring session, is discussing the draft resolution on the possible military escalation in Ukraine.
The Foreign Relations Committee was supposed to discuss the draft resolution prepared by the Faction-Independent MPs on the current events in Ukraine. However, the authors of the draft decided to dismiss the document and called on the ruling party to adopt a single, multi-party resolution.
According to MP Mikheil Daushvili, the procedure for dismissing the draft resolution will start today.
“The Russian Federation has been gathering huge combat units and military equipment along the Ukrainian border in recent months, and has even threatened large-scale military attack directly. What is happening in Ukraine right now is an extraordinary geopolitical crisis, which directly threatens not only Ukraine but the entire Black Sea region as well as European security. As a result, Georgia’s support for Ukraine, a strategic partner and friend, is important today, not only for Ukraine but also for Georgia’s national security, sovereignty, independence, and democratic growth, as Russia threatens both Ukraine and Georgia. Russia is demanding assurances from the West that Ukraine and Georgia will not join NATO, implying that Russia is making a decision regarding these countries to join the alliance, which is unacceptable. This is a clear attack on our sovereignty and independence. As a result, the current threat is not just a concern to Ukraine, but also a threat to Georgia, which requires a proper response. We recognize that neither the political will nor the resources exist to discuss military-technical assistance to Ukraine, but Georgia must express its full political support for the benefit of the Ukrainian people. Support for Ukraine is a bipartisan issue, thus debating two draft resolutions in Parliament today is inappropriate. As a result, we hope that the Georgian Dream will have the courage to call the occupant an occupier and provide Ukraine with adequate political assistance”, - said Mikheil Daushvili.
Giorgi Khelashvili, First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, calls on the Parliament to support the resolution in support of Ukraine, prepared by the Georgian Dream.
“We call on you to support the resolution in support of Ukraine. This document is very important for peace in the region, for our solidarity with Ukraine. This is a very important resolution and is a very important fact for fixing Georgia’s position”, - added Giorgi Khelashvili.
