Chairman of the Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, as part of his visit to Brussels, met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the host country, Eliane Tillieux, and the Speaker of the Belgian Senate, Stephanie D’Hose.
The sides discussed the deepening of inter-parliamentary cooperation and Georgia"s EU integration process with a major focus on Georgia’s application for EU membership. One of the main topics of conversation was Russian aggression in Ukraine and the importance of solidarity and support for Ukraine.
“This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Georgia and the Kingdom of Belgium. Inter-parliamentary connections were discussed. We talked about inter-parliamentary relations. Friendship groups from both sides are quite active. We also discussed Georgia’s candidacy for EU membership and Belgium’s support in this regard. Meetings were also held in EU institutions during the visit, and it appears that the EU is attempting to make the bureaucracy as efficient as possible in terms of producing various communications, questionnaires, and evaluations.
As a result, we anticipate that the administrative part will be completed very fast. The first topic we"re discussing with our colleagues these days is Ukraine and Russia"s aggression against Ukraine, which began and continues. It is critical to become acquainted with our colleagues’ perspectives on this topic and to explain our position, which is represented in our complete solidarity with the Ukrainian people and state. Everyone wishes for a speedy conclusion to this conflict. Human tragedies, which we witness on a daily basis, must come to a stop”, - said Shalva Papuashvili.
