President of Georgia concludes her visit to Bucharest. As a part of the visit, Salome Zourabichvili met with her Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis. The parties signed an agreement on establishing strategic relations between Georgia and Romania.

The agreement relies on the provisions of the Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation signed between the two countries on 26 March 1996 and reaffirms the numerous commitments made by the two sides, including support for one another’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act. Moreover, it outlines numerous pathways for developing relations between Georgian and Romania, including through large infrastructural projects in the Black Sea.

Besides, Georgian President met with Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă to discuss developing relations between the two countries. Salome Zourabichvili tweeted after the meeting that “Romania has been one of our closest partners in Europe”. She underlined that there are “plenty of reasons for that”, including “a common history of challenges, common values by which we see the future, [and] a sea that we share”.

The President also met with Alina Gorghiu, the acting Chairperson of the Romanian Senate, and Marcel Ciolacu, the Chairperson of the Chamber of Deputies. The sides discussed how to elevate cooperation with Romania to an even more “intensive and higher level”.
