We can only hope that opposition will reassess the events, if this does not happen, there is a danger of failure. Such a statement made today the Chairman of the Georgian Dream faction after a meeting between the parliamentary majority and the opposition regarding the Public Defender’s candidates.

“There was a compromise from our side to choose one of the 5 candidates that they wanted - their categorical position is that they will not support any other candidate except the two candidates presented by them.

One of the main arguments for us is political impartiality. From the candidates presented by them, the possibility of this is excluded. There are also some awkward moments towards our colleague, Iago Khvichia, although it is probably hard to imagine that the leader of a political party will manage to be politically neutral if elected. Therefore, out of 8 candidates, 5 candidates have remained, where we have a more or less guarantee of political impartiality.

We suggested that they choose one of the 5, but we did not get a positive result. We can only hope that they will once again reassess the events, put the state interest of fulfilling the European recommendations first, and maybe they will come back with a changed position. If this does not happen, there is a danger of failure”, - said Mamuka Mdinaradze.
