Before arrival in Tbilisi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany presented her position to the Government in an official statement.
“During the past weeks, they have been waving the EU flag in the streets of Tbilisi to protect pluralism and the rule of law. During my visit to Georgia, I would like to clearly state that Germany fully supports Georgia"s European perspective.
We see attempts to steer Georgia away from the pro-European course, which is defended by the absolute majority of Georgians. We see the pressure the country is facing from inside and outside.
Within the framework of my visit to Georgia, I plan to talk to the representatives of the Georgian government about the steps they are taking to obtain the status of a candidate for EU membership.
Besides respecting democratic standards, and this is especially true of media freedom, it concerns maintaining a strong civil society and civilized public debate - even if opinions are sometimes far from one another”, - writes Annalena Baerbock.
