The Strasbourg court refused Mikheil Saakashvili to be transferred to Warsaw - Rati Bregadze

The Strasbourg court refused Mikheil Saakashvili to be transferred to Warsaw. Such a statement made today the Minister of Justice.

“Pursuant to the decision of the Strasbourg court, former President Mikheil Saakashvili was refused to be transferred to Warsaw.

The state was not instructed to transfer the third president to another institution for treatment within the country either.

The state was not instructed to transfer him to another institution for treatment within the country”, - said Rati Bregadze.

As he added, Mikheil Saakashvili’s lawyers had subsequently also appealed to the ECHR against the ruling by Tbilisi Court of Appeals in March, which in turn upheld the earlier verdict of Tbilisi City Court denying Saakashvili release or postponement of the rest of his sentence on health grounds.

Besides, Bregadze said that Saakashvili, who has been undergoing treatment at the Vivamedi civilian clinic in Tbilisi since May 2022, could be transferred back to a penitentiary facility in case of an “appropriate decision” by the doctors involved in his treatment.
