The Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia held an introductory meeting with the new Head of the EU Monitoring Mission. Vakhtang Gomelauri congratulated Dimitrios Karabalis on his appointment and wished him success in his future endeavours.

The Minister emphasized the significant role of the EUMM on the territory adjacent to the occupation line, which represents the only effective international mechanism operating on the territory of Georgia. Within the framework of the meeting, the parties discussed the issue of illegal detentions of citizens living in the vicinity of the occupied territories.

Vakhtang Gomelauri highlighted the importance of the EU support, considering the illegal “borderisation” process carried out by the Russian Federation in Georgia.

At the end of the meeting, the parties discussed prospects for deepening cooperation and the issues of future cooperation have been agreed.
