The impeachment of the President is not a political but a legal issue. Such a statement made today the Prime Minister of Georgia at the joint press conference with the EU High Representative, European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell.

“We are building a strong democracy, a European-style democracy, a legal state where, first of all, the constitution is protected and respected. The president, the prime minister, the government should be examples of protecting and respecting the constitution.

This is not a political issue. This is a purely legal topic, to which we have made a formal response. We explained that despite the fact that we know that we do not have a sufficient number of votes in the parliament for impeachment, we respect and protect the constitution of our country, and we were obliged and forced to make this formal response. Therefore, this decision has nothing to do with the European integration process”, - said Irakli Garibashvili.

He made the above remarks after Josep Borrell responded to the process of impeachment against the President by the Georgian Dream at the press conference held together with the Prime Minister and said that “the impeachment of the President carries a risk, which will further strain the situation and increase polarization”.
