Since 2013, there have been no statements filed in the European Court of Human Rights regarding the violation of inmates’ rights - Mikanadze

Givi Mikanadze and Khatia Tsilosani, members of the Permanent Delegation of the Parliament of Georgia to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), participated in the debate held during the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Mikanadze, who was elected for the 2nd time as the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on the Implementation of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights of PACE, emphasized the changes achieved by the Georgian authorities in the penal system since 2013.

“Since 2013, there have been no statements filed in the European Court of Human Rights regarding the violation of inmates’ rights”, - said Givi Mikanadze in his speech at the session.

He mentioned that the positive observations outlined in the report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) unequivocally reflect the Georgian government’s commitment to upholding the rights of inmates and ensuring the quality of treatment and medical services provided to prisoners.

Khatia Tsilosani, a delegation member, participated in the session’s debate focused on the theme “Globalization in Times of Crisis and War”.

“Even though COVID-19 and the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the disruption of the supply chain, obviously harmed Georgia’s economy, we have managed to maintain stable economic growth and made progress in achieving the country’s European aspiration by getting candidate status”, - said Khatia Tsilosani.

The winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is taking place in Strasbourg from January 22-26.
