Saba Skhvitaridze, an activist and member of the "Ahali" party, remains in pre-trial detention despite the Prosecution softening his charges.

He was charged with the attack against a police which caused health damage, carrying a jail penalty of 7-11 years, which today was reclassified to "intentional minor bodily harm". A charge punishable by a fine, correctional labor, house arrest, or imprisonment for a term of 1 to 3 years.

The initial charge stemmed from a confrontation on the evening of December 4, 2024, during a protest near the Tbilisi Marriott.

During the confrontation, one protester was slapped in the face by a man believed to be a thug, the so-called "Titushka", with the incident allegedly leading Skhvitaridze to hit the man back. The person, who wore no police insignia, was later identified as police officer Mirian Kavtaradze.

Prosecutors admitted today that Saba Skhvitaridze could not identify the individual as a policeman.

The next court hearing is scheduled for Saturday, August 26.
