The ruling team responds to the US Embassy’s concern regarding the department created to combat hate speech. “Radio Liberty” addressed the Embassy with a question.

In response, the diplomatic agency stated that they oppose restrictive laws and are concerned about the Georgian government’s department for combating hate speech. “Georgian Dream” states that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs [MFA] will answer the Embassy’s questions.

Tengiz Sharmanashvili, the First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament’s Defense and Security Committee, explains once again that the legislation prohibits the public insult of people, and a similar law, apart from Georgia, is in force in most European countries.

“Fight against hate speech is not our know-how. Every European country is already fighting this, and in more radical forms than in our country.

The Embassy of the United States of America should thoroughly study the court decisions, and it will discover that it was not a matter of freedom of speech and expression, but rather the use of hate speech. The US Embassy could not figure this out; it had insufficient information in this direction, and made this statement because of that. I am convinced that our MFA will explain the essence of this court decision and our legislation to them”, - said Tengiz Sharmanashvili.
