According to official data, the area of forests burned in August is 824 hectares, although it only partially reflects in the real picture. In fact, the area of burnt forests in August is much higher. Part of burnt forests are not counted, and part are concealed for unknown reasons. Environmental experts say that the burnt area is much bigger.
According to official data, in August there were 45 fires across Georgia. In most cases, the report of state agencies and local population does not coincide with each other. The locals speak about much more extensively fires than officials.
Representatives of NGOs say that the country is facing an ecological catastrophe and it is completely unprepared to fight with fires.
In the nearest days it is planned to create commission for exploration of burned areas in Borjomi Gorge. In parallel, investigation is underway to determine the causes of the fire. However, concrete answer to what has caused 45 fires in a month is yet unknown.
