Opposition calls on NGOs to nominate their candidate for position of Ombudsman

Who will replace Ucha Nanuashvili on the position of the Public Defender? The term of the ombudsmanexpires in December. The non-governmental sector does not participate in the selection of a new candidate, the decision will be made in a single-party manner.

Opposition suspects that Ucha Nanuashvili, who creates discomfort to the government with his loud statements will be replaced by an obedient candidate. Therefore, the parliamentary opposition addresses non-governmental organizations to nominate their candidate.

"I think that any candidate nominated by the ruling team and then approved by theruling majority in the Parliament will have the trust that can have an independent candidate. Therefore, I want to call on NGOs to discuss such a possibility to name their own candidate, "- said Salome Samadashvili, a member of the National Movement.

The "European Georgia" believes that it is important for the candidate himself who will be elected and supported by the Parliament to have legitimacy from the civil society.

"Any government should not only think about non-governmental sector in this regard
but also have consultations with the NGOs who are interested in the next Ombudsman," - said Giorgi Tugushi, member of "European Georgia".

Ucha Nanuashvili`s 4-year term on the post of Public Defender is due to end in December. His substitute should be nominated until the end of November.
