Third sector, presumably, will nominate candidacy for Ombudsman

NGOs will presumably present to the Parliament their candidate for the position of the Public Defender. The Executive Director of the Transparency International - Georgia has commented on this, in response to the appeal of the parliamentary opposition. The MPs today called on the third sector to nominate their candidacy for the post of ombudsman because they believe that the person who will be nominated by the ruling team will not have the public trust.

As Eka Gigauri said, the NGOs had consultations on this issue much before the political discussion started. Accordingly, in the nearest future it is not excluded that the third sector will offer its own candidacy to the Parliament.

She also responded to Mamuka Mdinaradze`s statement, who stated that the norm and competence that there is no precedent regarding the norm and competence of the NGOs for nominating a candidate for the Public Defender

The NGO sector reminds the governing body of international obligations that the legislature has taken, even with the signing of the declaration, which means open parliament, and according to which the civil sector should be considered in the decision making process.

"Obviously, we do not really think that we should vote for the Public Defender. We really know our rights, but on the other hand, if the Parliament aims to conduct transparently the process, it will involve different stakeholders, including NGOs, "-
Eka Gigauri said.

Ucha Nanuashvili`s 4-year term on the position of Public Defender is due to end in December. His successor should be nominated until the end of November.
