Level of independence, mandate and functions - civil sector speaks about need for reform of State Security

The civil sector speaks about the need for reform of the State Security Service.

According to NGOs, the reform was planned two years ago when the security service was separated from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but nothing was done.

The civil sector believes that the rule for choosing the head of the State Security needs to be changed in the first place and it should be mandatory to submit an annual report to the legislative body. Discussion of the issue in the extended format is also planned

"We will discuss the quality of independence of the security service, as well as the mandate and functions and we think that the functions should be specified by the legislation," - said Sopho Verdzeuli, representative of the Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center.
