Giorgi Gakharia and Fastou Bensouda discussed progress in ongoing investigation of 2008 war

The ongoing investigation of the August 2008 war was discussed by the Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and the International Criminal Court’s Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda during the meeting within the framework of the Munich Security Conference.

The parties pointed out Georgia’s productive cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office with a view to ensuring a detailed investigation of priorities vitally important to the Georgian side, such as the ethnic cleansing against Georgians during the August 2008 war, torture of Georgian prisoners of war, and their deaths resulting from torture.


The International Criminal Court’s Chief Prosecutor emphasized the progress in the investigation and the great effort invested by her investigators toward enhancing the efficiency and pace of the investigation.


During the meeting, the Georgian side reaffirmed its commitment to continuing cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office and to assisting it in the investigation of cases of mass violations of the rights of ethnic Georgians during the August 2008 war.
