The remains of 13 individuals who went missing during the 1992-93-armed conflict in Abkhazia have been identified and returned to their families. The remains have been placed at the Holy Trinity Cathedral for public viewing.
The memorial service of 13 people is being held at Sameba Cathedral Church today and tomorrow, April 23-24.
Four warriors out of 13 will be buried at Digomi Brothers Cemetery, while other warriors and peaceful citizens will be buried at different other locations following their families" decisions.
In 2019, the Georgian government created a commission to find the burial sites and identify the bodies of 2,300 individuals who went missing during the armed conflicts in Georgia in the 1990s and in 2008.
It was possible to identify the bodies of Georgian warriors through the joint efforts of the Office of the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
