We want new trade routes and investments on both shores of the Black Sea, this will help to stabilize the Caucasus - Olivér Várhelyi

Europe is vulnerable when it comes to energy supply. Black Sea electricity cable will minimize the region’s vulnerability. Such a statement made today Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement.

“I think that crisis always emerges opportunity, and this is what we try to grab. The electricity cable project is going to be very important because this could be a blueprint not only in the Eastern partner countries but also with our Southern neighbours, meaning that we can use our common vulnerabilities.

Europe is vulnerable when it comes to energy supply. While the Caucasus region could help bring green electricity to Europe, and this minimizes our vulnerability. With this project, we are minimizing the vulnerability of the region because we are connecting to the region directly.

Of course, should that be a need for electricity on the side of the Caucasus, we could help that region get reliable energy sources. So, we should help each other, and that’s why the connectivity point of the €17 billion-worth economic and investment plan is very important.

This is why we want to build Black Sea connectivity not only when it comes to energy but also when it comes to the internet or transport. So, we want new trade routes and investments on both shores of the Black Sea. This will help to stabilize the Caucasus”, - said Olivér Várhelyi.
