Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Justice of Ukraine supported the draft law on registered partnerships

The Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine supported the draft law on registered partnerships. This was announced by People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun, writes svidomi.in.ua.

The draft law is intended to help LGBT couples define mutual rights and responsibilities, property ownership, inheritance, social protection, and rights in the event of the death or disappearance of a partner.

Inna Sovsun submitted the draft law to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on March 7, 2023. The draft law was worked on for nine months by the NGOs Ukrainian LGBT Military for Equal Rights and Fulcrum UA.

Back then, the ministries opposed it because the bill would allegedly equate registered partnerships with marriage.

Now the ministries have changed their position. The Ministry of Justice is already preparing amendments for the second reading of the bill.

“Now the initiative is entirely up to the parliament, which should support the draft law in the first reading and allow the Ministry of Justice to make its amendments in the second reading”, - commented Inna Sovsun.
