Levan Gachechiladze, Georgian politician and businessman, passed away at 61

Levan Gachechiladze has died at the age of 61, a loss confirmed by his family.

He served in the 5th, 6th, and 7th convocations of the Parliament, was an opposition candidate in the 2008 presidential election.

Gachechiladze started political career in 1999. Between 1999 and 2002, he represented the electoral bloc "Citizens` Union of Georgia" in the Parliament`s 5th convocation.

He soon parted ways with the majority, co-founding the New Rights party [with David Gamkrelidze]. Following the 2002 local elections, he joined the Tbilisi City Council on the Right`s list.

From 2004 to 2008, he served in the 6th convocation of Parliament [majoritarian representative from Vake district], under the "New Rights" electoral bloc.

In 2008, he was the United Opposition`s candidate for the presidency. Between June 7 and June 20, 2008, Gachechiladze was a member of the 7th convocation of Parliament, elected via the "United Opposition" bloc.
