Competition for slecting candidates for European judge postponed again - opposition talks about politicized process

The government has to submit the list of candidates to the position of a judge in the European Court of Human Rights before July. Selection deadline has been extended for a second time.

Government made the decision about extension of the deadline public today, though the reasons for postponing the process were not named.

A written statement on changing the term was published by the Ministry of Justice on March 15. The Ministry stated that scheduled the election of judges for the Parliamentary Assembly fall session which is there was more time to attract candidates, to listen to them and to draw up the list.

This argument is not acceptable for one of the candidates. David Jandieri thinks that the government is delaying the process artificially.

The delay of the qualifying competition for the second time raises questions in the civil sector as well.

The opposition talks about politicizing the process. After Strasbourg rejected the list of candidates sent by the government, the critics point to the lack of transparency in the competition.

The ruling party.denies the information about the politicization of the process. The members of the ruling team do not know why the selection of judges was postponed for the second time, however, they are convinced that the transparency of the process is guaranteed.

The re-selection of judges became necessary after the European Court of Human Rights rejected three candidates - Eva Gotsiridze, Alexander Baramidze and Badashvili..
