Opposition is on the verge of splitting - part of opposition may support new constitution

The opposition is on the verge of splitting. Parties can not agree on what conditions they should agree with the government during consultation on constitutional amendments. Part of Opposition believes that if the country does not move from 2020 to the proportional system, there is no reason to discuss other issues with the government.

The presidential direct election procedure and the electoral system remain the principal issues for the parliamentary opposition.

It is not ruled out that the part of the opposition will support the constitution if the majority will leave the election blocs in the project. The opposition does not confirm this information, but some of the politicians openly say that they do not have the hope of fulfilling all their demands and are willing to give up something.

The meeting of the members of the parliamentary majority has recently ended in the office of the Georgian Dream. According to Giorgi Volski, the ruling team is ready to review its position on the prohibition of creation of blocks and reduction of the election threshold. And the Georgian Dream does not intend to change its position on the alienation of lands, the record on marriage, the electoral system and the rule of electing of the president.

The members of the ruling party plan to hold consultations with the opposition on constitutional amendments next week.
