The employees of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the General Prosecutor`s Office of Georgia, within the framework of a joint declaration signed with representatives of the US Department of State, and as a result of close bilateral coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI], have detained a citizen of the US and Uzbekistan who was internationally wanted by U.S. law enforcement authorities.
"The man was wanted on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, as well as providing and attempting to provide material support.
The officers of the Wanted Division under the Main Division for the Fight against Organized Crime of the Central Criminal Police Department detained the said individual at Tbilisi International Airport upon his arrival in Georgia from one of the countries. According to the US law enforcement agencies, the wanted individual formed a group in the US to support a foreign terrorist organization and, for the same purpose, also created a financial assistance network that he led himself.
The leader and members of this group provided active material-technical and financial support to terrorist organizations in Syria, including the "Islamic State".
Furthermore, the detainee urged various individuals to travel to Syria to fight and offered them assistance in doing so. Currently, the extradition procedures provided by law are underway regarding the detainee.
